What is private equity?

Private equity is an investment approach that involves taking ownership stakes in companies that are not publicly listed on a stock exchange. Capital is typically pooled into a fund managed by a specialized investment firm, which then identifies, acquires, and actively manages portfolio companies with the goal of generating attractive returns over time.

Private equity generally targets companies at various stages of maturity — from early-stage ventures to mature businesses seeking expansion capital or restructuring support. The common thread is an opportunity to create value through active ownership, strategic guidance, and operational improvement.

How it works

There are several common ways private equity creates value. While each strategy is different, the underlying principle is the same: deploy capital, improve the business, and exit at a higher valuation.

Leveraged Buyouts (LBOs)

In an LBO, a private equity firm acquires a company using a combination of equity and borrowed funds. The firm assumes control of the business, identifies operational improvements, and positions the company for a future sale at a higher valuation.

Growth Capital

Growth capital is provided to established companies that want to expand into new markets, launch new products, or invest in capacity. The private equity partner typically takes a minority stake and supports the leadership team through the next phase of growth.

Distressed & Special Situations

Private equity investors can also specialize in financially stressed businesses. They work with management to restructure debt, streamline operations, and return the company to financial health — generating returns through the turnaround.

Why it matters

Private equity gives investors access to opportunities that aren't available in public markets — along with the ability to influence outcomes directly. It is well-suited for investors with a longer time horizon and a higher tolerance for illiquidity, who are seeking returns that can complement a diversified portfolio.

At Western Falcon, we partner with operators and investors to structure private equity transactions that fit the opportunity — no off-the-shelf solutions, just thoughtful capital.
